UMBC Bounces Back with a Win over Mt. St. Mary’s

GonzagaShakenBake A long trip to the eastern shore to meet Salisbury on the pitch ended with UMBC coming up short 45-10 in a game much closer than the score represented.  Confident and eager to redeem themselves, UMBuC ruggers pulled together for their first home game of the season against Mt. St. Mary's.

Poor field conditions made the game a muddy mess that was a ton of fun to play in.  The lovely Alumni brought a special memorial to Lucky the Dog and the team vowed to win in his honor. After a sloppy start, UMBC pulled ahead with three tries to put the score at 17-0.  8-Man Peuse ran through 3 defenders to score off of a scrum; A bruising series of forwards runs was finished by captain Erik Anderson; and shifty scrum half Ziggy showed great field awareness, scoring during the confusion caused by a penalty advantage.

As field conditions deteriorated in the second half, UMBuC held off against a surge of three tries from Mt. St. Mary's and added another try to their total thanks the shake-n-bake moves of flanker Gonzaga.  The final score was 22-17, UMBC on top, leaving the current record at 1-1.

UMBuC is practicing hard and eagerly awaiting its next home game versus Johns Hopkins, in what will surely be another great match.

Also, a special commendation to B-side, who displayed a remarkable amount of individual talent and teamwork to score 8 tries against Mt. St. Mary's B-side and only allowing one score.  Flanker Grimmace started the game with a hard 60 meter run, topped off by a try by 8-man Larry "Poops" Toler.  UMBuC didn't let up, with several tries by speedy wing Shadow and many bruising hits delivered by the forwards.  The B-side showed a lot of promise, UMBuC will have a very talented team when these athletes gain the rugby knowledge to put them on A-side.
